The Lion and the Sword (Volume 1) is the first part of a two
volume multi-disciplinary inquiry into the origins and development of Sri Lanka’s
races, languages, cultural traditions and social institutions. This volume is
primarily ethnological and comprises three comprehensive essays on Sri Lankan
anthropology, linguistics, history and culture through which the author takes
the reader to the plains and valleys of Hindustan, to Central Asia and Southern
Russia, to the Mediterranean and Northern Africa, on the Middle East and the
East Indies, in an attempt to trace the origins and development of the island’s
peoples and languages.
The author has gathered around him a vast corpus of subject matter
from a wide array of reputed sources to substantiate established historical
facts and has also postulated some new ideas and theories which should stimulate
further research and inquiry.
